While a hematoma and a bruise are both results of bleeding under the skin, there are significant differences between the two. A bruise is often minor and is the result of tiny blood vessels breaking under the skin. A hematoma occurs when blood from a larger vessel pools under the skin or in a muscle, leading to a larger, raised area that can be painful and take longer to heal.
Unlike bruises that typically heal without treatment within about two weeks, hematomas can sometimes require medical intervention, especially if they are in critical areas like the skull. At ENT Associates of Santa Barbara, we can determine if a hematoma requires drainage and perform the procedure.
What Causes a Hematoma?
Hematomas often result from:
- Accidents, falls or blunt trauma during sports activities.
- Damaged blood vessels during medical procedures.
Additionally, certain medications or conditions that affect blood clotting can increase the likelihood of developing a hematoma after relatively minor traumas.
What Are the Symptoms of a Hematoma?
- A lump or swelling in the affected area
- Pain, which may range from mild to severe
- A reddish or bluish color on the skin, similar to a bruise
- Warmth and tenderness around the affected area
- Limited movement in the nearby joints or muscles, if the hematoma is large or located near a joint
How Are Hematomas Treated?
Treatment options for hematomas hinge on their size, location and severity. Mild hematomas may simply require rest, ice application to reduce swelling, compression with a bandage to prevent further bleeding and elevation of the affected area to decrease blood flow.
For more significant hematomas, especially those causing pain or mobility issues, a healthcare provider may recommend additional interventions. Drainage may be required when the hematoma is large, painful, does not dissolve on its own over time or presents a risk of infection or pressure to surrounding tissues.
The decision to drain a hematoma should be based on a thorough evaluation by a medical professional. Our team at ENT Associates of Santa Barbara will work with you to determine the best plan for treating your hematoma and bringing relief to uncomfortable symptoms.
